Boot Scootin’

August 21, 2012

Today I had a list of about 5 errands to run, and I was on a mission to knock them out so I could get back to work. The problem? One of those errands involved a trip to Target, also known as the deep abyss. My wallet has yet to survive the lure of relatively-inexpensive pretty things, and today was no exception – even with a list in hand.

First stop was the plus size clothing section, which has been downgraded to about 4 racks of mismatched, wild printed monstrosities. It was really bad, and made me sad as I used to be able to find decent basics like tees and dresses there. Officially over the Target plus sizes now.

Next to the clothes are shoes. I was lured by a very tall cobalt blue wedge shoe that stood at the end of the aisle. I contemplated them before nixing them because they’re strictly sitting shoes – not ones I could walk in for an extended period of time. Then, I saw the boots. For kicks and giggles, I thought I’d try to shove my feet and calves into some $35 cowboy boots, not expecting them to fit. Can you guess what came next?

(This isn’t what I would style with the boots, it’s just what I had on today and didn’t want to change.)

My new motto with boots might be: “If they fit, then I must get!” They are so comfortable. I love, love, love boots. I am hoping to style these with different looks, including some new things on the way from Gwynnie Bee. I am putting together a roundup of wide-calf boots for fellow boot-lovers – look for that soon. Edited to add: I am wearing a size US11 shoe and the circumference around mid-calf where the top hits is about 16.75 inches.

As if grabbing a pair of cowboy boots wasn’t enough, I also spent a little too long in the makeup section. My virtual Sephora cart is currently sitting at $400-something, which will never happen. Instead, I grabbed some budget e.l.f. Cosmetics items to fill the trends I wanted to try, including a red lip. I always think I look ridiculous with most lipsticks, but wanted to try a red lip since it’s so hot right now. Enter the $3 e.l.f. Studio Matte Lipstick in Rich Red.

I think a more blue-red might be better, but this is a good budget-friendly way for me to get acclimated to a red lip.

Do you have cowboy boots? What do you wear them with?

Here in Portland, only Hipsters wear cowboy boots. Personally, I think they are cute but I can’t pull off that look!

ha! Well, here in Kentucky, most anyone can get away with cowboy boots. I bet you’d look super cute with them… and some hipster black framed glasses – ha!

  • http://www.theyearofthephoenix.blogspot.com/ Jill (Lady Lazarus)

Ha! I saw those exact same blue shoes and had the exact same reaction to them!

I love the boots, though! I’m not really a boot person, but that’s only because I’ve never been able to wear them. Perhaps I’ll try some on one of these days.

the blue shoes were soooo cute! I just can’t handle the height.

I always go in to Target with the intent on looking for the 2 things on my list…..and come out with 3-5 bags later! LOL. I am always scared for my wallet when I walk in that store. And I NEVER ever looked at the clothing dept before, thought it would be along the lines of Walmart…well I’ve recently discovered their clothes & shoes…oh lordy! Your boots are so cute on you, I never thought I was a cowboy boot girl, but I’ll be looking for how you style these and may have to go get myself a pair!

Yes! I left with 4 bags today and a big box of hangers. Should have easily been 2 bags max. Oh well!

  • http://twitter.com/retta Retta

Oooh, love the boots. I have a hard time finding boots that fit my calves so I may have to check these out.

    • http://www.skinnyemmie.com/ Emily Sandford

Oh, these would fit you with room to spare. I think they also have them in black and gray.

    • Amy

Hi Retta, if you buy good leather boots, they can be stretched. I always have mine stretched. I shop at a local western store and they are, luckily, able to stretch them there, but a good cobbler can do it. I had one pair stretched several inches.

What we should do @Retta is go to the boot store and get a tried-and-true pair of genuine cowgirl boots that are made to fit.

  • Tracy – from Bama…

You look sooo cute w/ that outfit and loving the red lips on you!!

  • Amy

Cowboy boots are my favorite. I wear them with so many things. I have large calves so I buy leather and stretch them to fit. It costs a little extra, but I have had a pair for 20 years.

Aaaaand now I have to go back to target for these boots! I live in Portland too (hi Lisa!) and I suddenly don’t care if anyone thinks I’m a hipster. Ha! I have to agree about the plus-size section… What happened? It used to be great. :-/ I don’t think it’s the same blue shoes, but I just bought some blue suede-ish wedges. Not made for walking around, but I looked cute sitting at my desk. ;) Looking forward to your list of wide-calf boots!

I saw cobalt blue wedges and then a slightly smaller heeled turquoise wedge which I LOVED. Jealous if you got those! These boots are just plain fun, and the comfort helped seal the deal.

  • Bailey @ Onederland or Bust!

I was just in a store yesterday that sold e.l.f. makeup. It was packaged as a little black book or something along those lines, basically a book of like 50 eye shadows for less than 20$. It looked like a great deal, but wasn’t sure of the quality. Do you like that particular brand?? Less than $20 for that much makeup is hard to pass up! lol

I’ve used a few different elf products, with varying success. Foundations and concealers I stay away from (I need much more coverage), but their powders, blushes, eyeshadows, eye pencils and lipsticks or glosses seem to be good! You can’t tell in the photo, but I’m wearing a purple eyeliner of theirs that is great. Can’t beat the prices.

    1. I LOVE that red lipstick on you! You totally rock it! 2. I think you could style those cowboy boots with that dress. Add a demin jacket, maybe a funky scarf with some brown/bronze to tie in the boots and there you go. 3. I think there should be a makeover room at Fitbloggin. I’ll bring the ridiculous amount of makeup I have and never, ever use, and you can help me show people what looks good on them and how to wear it. :) (j/k, but it would be fun)

    • http://www.skinnyemmie.com/ Emily Sandford

thanks – so glad you like the red! It’s growing on me. and yes, I’m thinking along the same lines of you with styling the boots – good call. And if there was a makeover room at Fitbloggin, I’m sure I wouldn’t get to many sessions – would be too busy playing!

  • http://twitter.com/book_fitness Sandy

I love my boots and wear them with everything. I like them with skirts. I’m in Texas, so boots are just part of the landscape year ’round.

  • http://www.rainintorainbows.com Shari@Rain into Rainbows

    You are so pretty!

My daughter got those same boots. They look really cute, and I’d love to get some, but alas, I’m lucky enough to be able to walk — I think boots might be pushing my luck just a bit. But for you, I’d definitely say they’re a YES!! Ditto w/the lipstick.

  • Lissa

You are so adorable! I am glad I was able to stumble over to your blog! You sound like me with the makeup! And alas no cowboy boots for me, but you can surely rock them!

  • http://bellaonthebeach.wordpress.com Bella

To me that is a blue-red lipstick. It’s definitely not an orange red. I think it brightens up your face in a really lovely way, so you may just need to get used to it. Or, try a warmer red to see if you like that better.
Those cowgirl boots are adorbs on you!

  • Kenlie

I’m digging the boots, and I think the red looks great on your lips. My guess is that you just have to get used to it because I think you look fab.

  • http://twitter.com/GryphonMage Gryph

I was going to say that that sounds like the plus size section at my Target…but since you live in Lexington, it probably WAS the Target I shop at.

  • Erin Walior

I love cowboy boots, unfortunately I cannot find any to fit my calves at the current moment. When they do fit, I wear them with jeans and skirts and tights, and whatever else I like!

That lipstick looks great on you, especially with the dress. So happy Target is carrying ELF stuff now!

  • http://twitter.com/Sarahe71390 Sarah

I bought me some of the boots too. They are my favorite! I have the grey and brown. I always have terrible luck when it comes to boots and my thick calves. My issue is that I have a tiny foot so most calve openings for boots of a size 6 are narrow. These fit great! And the footbed is soft, flexible, and durable.
