Virtual Fistbump: Holley Mangold

I’ve been quite obsessed with Holley Mangold the past few weeks. An article about a 350 pound female olympian grabbed my attention, and ever since, I’ve put her in my imaginary pack of plus size besties. (Also on this list? Melissa McCarthy, Adele, Ashley Graham, and Brooke Elliott)

If you’re not familiar with Holley, she is a first time Olympian who will be competing in Olympic Weightlifting. She is the sister of New York Jets center Nick Mangold. As a kid, Holley played on the football team – not as a kicker, but as an offensive lineman. Seriously. And her favorite food is steak and favorite books are Sookie Stackhouse novels. It’s like we’re destined to be friends.

Check out this video to learn more about her. She does use humor to talk about her weight, which I’m not a massive fan of, but I like her confidence. I loved this quote:

You’re the only one who controls if you’re confident or not.

Holley’s teammate in the same weight class is the also-fabulous Sarah Robles. Sarah co-authors a blog called “Pretty Strong” which is a great read to see the work that goes into being an Olympic athlete. Good luck in London, ladies!

Thanks for sharing this! Holley is a great woman, overall I think. Her comments on confidence were pretty good, I thought. Nick was a Buckeye and his sister received all manner of press as he was in the spotlight; I’ve very glad she’s got some positive of her own and can finally stand in her own shiny place in history!

I love the role models they can be…of course my #1 fav (and I would hope bestie one day) is Melissa Mcarthy too! I even google her to see her latest style outfits.

Thank you for sharing this! I read an article about Sarah a couple of weeks ago and it rang true for me. I’ve been struggling with the whole “what does strong look like?” thing…the “fitsporation” thing shows “strong” women who are still a size 2 or whatever but the fact of the matter is that in order to move heavy weight, you have to have a larger body. I have learned this in my kettlebell workouts and sometimes I think I should be doing an exercise that’s specifically designed to melt the fat versus being about strength (KBs do both) but in the end, I feel like I was made to do kettlebells…it comes naturally to me and I think my body size and shape are a big part of why.

Wow! the mind control she must have is beyond what many of us can even comprehend…its a shame she thinks she would never be able to be any smaller though, I think she could…but anyway…YOU GO GIRL, BRING US HOME A MEDAL!!!

    ps hi Emmie!

I so agree! When I first saw her interviewed on TV, I though the same thing: I totally want to be her bff. I blogged about my (borderline creepy) obsession here: http://www.lostafterlosing.com/2012/11/01/whyimobsessedwithholleymangold/
