Signature Scent

June 2, 2012

When I think of my mom, I can remember the signature perfume that she wore (Quelque Fleur). I’ve never found a perfume that I liked more than a couple of weeks, so I decided to do something about it!

I ventured to this cute fragrance boutique in downtown Lexington, The Crushed Violet. Owner Erin (who I interviewed for HerKentucky) worked with me to find some great scents.

I was easily able to articulate what I DIDN’T like, but was hard to explain what I DID like. Erin narrowed it down based on my dislikes, and I came away with 3 that I couldn’t decide between.

Leila Lu: Pear Blossom, fresh cut grass and tangerine, jasmine, vanilla and cotton musk
ElizabethW Sweet Tea: An enticing marriage of oriental black teas, juicy fresh Amalfi lemons, and the sweetness of almond honey.
i Profumi di Firenze Brezza di Mare: Sea Salt and Bergamot from the Calabrian coast, fresh picked lemons and limes from the seaside cliffs of Sicily, watermelon

When I got home, I put on some of the Brezza di Mare to see if I could go all day liking a scent. I haven’t stopped smelling myself! Love it so far. Will try the others in the next week, and can hopefully narrow it down so I can go back to get a full bottle and start having a signature scent!

What is your signature scent?

  • @LisainLouKY

Those all sound lovely. Until I came across Happy Hearts by Clinique I didn’t really like perfumes. Now, I alternate between that & Aveda.

  • Tina

Philosophy’s Baby Grace! Clean and comforting :)

    • Emmie

I like that one too. Probably the most consistent fragrance I’ve ever worn is Philosophy’s Amazing Grace

I’m so fickle about perfumes! I seem to change moods too often to stick to one. Right now, I’m loving Marc Jocob’s “Daisy” for spring/summer time!
In the fall I love anything with vanilla and sandalwood. So warm comforting! :)

I don’t but the next time I’m down visiting my sister at UK, I’m going to stop in there and discover one!

    • Emmie

I had a lot of fun there! Block out some time so you can work through the different smells – probably at least 30 minutes.

Happy Hearts by Clinique is also my scent! I have people ask me about it all the time – men and women! I’m allergic to a lot of scents, so if I find one I can wear, I tend to stick with it. My husband likes Ciara, but I absolutely cannot wear it. I’m glad that you found some you like.

Back in the day I did product testing for Aveda. One of the scents I tested was amazing but as far as I can tell it never went into production. Other than that I have not found a perfume that smells good on me. Maybe Erin can help me out!

For some reason my body chemistry and personality really favor spicer scents, though I’m actually a fan of florals. As such, my go-to fragrance is currently Coco Mademoiselle (in the past it was Ysatis). Still, when I want to get my floral kick in, I reach for my L’Ombre Dans L’eu…which is divine in that it smells like fresh green roses. What I really like about the Chanel fragrance though is that it is extremely long-lasting; ; I still get compliments about the fragrance at the end of an 8 hour work day.

The description of those fragrances sounds divine. I might try a decant. Whenever I want to try a scent without buying a whole bottle (especially scents that my local stores don’t carry), I get a little decant of it at The Perfumed Court website. No affiliation, I assure you. I am but a humble teacher in South Georgia. Just mentioned it because you’ve given me so many great sites to visit. Though I’d return the favor.

    • Sandy

No luck with any of the scents you mentioned. Ah well, maybe when I visit Atlanta next month I can stop by some of the nicer stores and see if they have these scents. I’m especially drawn to i Profumi di Firenze’s Brezza di Mare. Sounds intriguing.

    • Emmie

Sandy- Thank you so much for telling me about the decant option at The Perfumed Court – I prefer to buy things locally (and will for these fragrances I’m trying), but my mom’s signature fragrance, Quelque Fleur, is hard to find and expensive. I just searched that site and ordered a 8ml decant of it for $12. You see, my mom passed about 5 years ago and I sometimes have a hard time remembering her voice, but I can remember her smell. Now, I’ll keep this little decant around so I can recall that smell whenever I want! Many hugs. :)

  • Emmie

Wanted to post an update- So yesterday I did the Brezza di Mare, which I wanted to bathe in. Seriously- I almost doused myself in it and then put it all over my pillows. Hubs, who is totally indifferent to these things, really liked the smell.

Today, I’m wearing Sweet Tea, which is definitely unique but I don’t think it’s for me. Hubs mentioned he loved yesterday’s, but doesn’t care for this one at all.

I’ll do the Leila Lu tomorrow.

Quelques Fleurs! I used to wear that in college and since have switched to Viktor & Rolf Flower Bomb and Chanel Mademoiselle. Now I think I need Quelques Fleurs again though!

    • Emmie

Hi Amber! I’m looking forward to getting the Quelque Fleur in the mail (I ordered a decant of it – see a few comments up) so I can be reminded of my mom, who passed. It’s a lovely scent!
Also, how cute is your blog?? Just subscribed :)

      • http://www.violapearl.com Amber

That is a great idea (the decant)-glad that it brings you good memories. It really is a magical scent. :) Thanks for the sweet compliment and for subscribing-I really enjoy your blog! I ended up buying one of the Webster for Target dresses after your posts!

  • Tamara

Creed Spring Flowers and Rolf & Viktor Flowerbomb are two current favs. I would say though, that Amazing Grace is my signature scent. I love that there is so much variety with the Philosophy brand: perfume, lotion, hand soap, bar soap, shampoo, deoderant, etc…. you can bathe yourself in their scents. Literally!

Thanks so much for stopping in! It was such fun working our way through the fragrances, and I’m so glad you found a love on your first trip. Niche fragrances are the best, aren’t they? So distinct. Look forward to your next visit.
One more little note: While we sell samples on The Crushed Violet website (and give complimentary ones with every order as well as any in-store visit), The Perfumed Court is a nice site, too. Also look into Surrender to Chance and The Posh Peasant. I am not affiliated with any of these sites, but find them particularly interesting if you are a perfumista looking to try vintage fragrances or score a large decant instead of a 1ml sample. Thank again!
