Plus Size Fitness Writer & Brand Representative

January 24, 2012

There are things that I used to regard as impossible. My mind, like many of yours, has an awful tendency to insert nasty seeds of negativity when it dared to dream. Slowly but surely, however, doubts are subsiding as I recognize that I have succeeded at many things in the past, and I am succeeding at things in the present.

Being a morbidly obese 450+ pound twenty-something is nothing I would wish on my worst enemy. Yet somehow I allowed my body to get to that nightmare after years of self-doubt created an environment so foggy I didn’t know how to escape. Having this blog as an outlet to hammer out my thoughts is one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself. Through your kind words and encouragement, I’ve found a community of my own that made it possible for me to share my journey – no matter how impossible I thought it might be. Each comment left sticks with me throughout my days of fighting the urge to binge eat or completely give up on finding the finish-line of success.

A couple of weeks ago when my photo was on Shape Magazine’s website, I had quite an emotional breakthrough. This publication that I regularly read (along with a bevy of other fitness magazines and websites) recognized that there is achievement in losing 113 pounds, even if that means I’m still over 300 pounds. My round belly and size 22/24 body has found an online home where millions of people go for fitness advice and inspiration. If they can allow and recognize this, can’t others?

I’m a FitFluential Ambassador, and in being so, I am getting the opportunity right now to be heard by fitness magazines in print and online, and also to be seen by fitness related brands. I was flabbergasted when ENELL Sports Bras agreed to let me handle their social media and write for their blog. A plus size fitness writer and brand ambassador for a sports bra company? Mind shattered.

Companies who are listening:

  • I am using this opportunity to toss out the pre-conceived notions that only rock-hard bodies or celebrities can represent fitness.
  • The lessons learned in the middle of a healthy living quest are often the ones that are most overlooked as we focus so much on the “before” and “after.”
  • It’s wonderful to have celebrity trainers featured, however it would also be wonderful to have people of all sizes featured, doing moves that are modified for them, and getting sage advice from those who know how hard it is to be large than average.
  • Let the average woman share her experience and talk to others in efforts to learn more about healthy living
I’m setting out to be a plus size fitness writer and brand ambassador. Hopefully one day people will find this idea less absurd and more awesome. Let’s represent all women at all fitness levels and sizes.
A short video of my story so far:

Emmie,  I think this is one of the most important posts …..As you know, I have a lot of the same thoughts and feelings as you and it has been YOU that has been one of my top ten influencers in my journey…I, too, long to be an ambassador and influencer for not just weight loss but for health, fitness and the emotional aspects of the weight….oh and the fashion too!  Many of the reasons and aspects of this journey make it look at how I can be of “service” while continuing forward in my journey!
YOU are a fit fluential through and through….and my goal is to be a plus size fitness writer and ambassador too!

I think this is amazing.  I honestly believe that what gets people so unhealthy is not being kind to your own body at any size!  (Finding websites like yours have helped so much!)  I started last summer at 422 and now I am 348 … my health is so much improved and I am actually living each day now. No longer do I say, “I’ll be happy when …”  I know each day I am healthier and I am happy now.  What you do is soooo important.  I am happy you are realizing this too!  =)

300 pounds or 120 pounds, it doesn’t matter, you are a great writer.  You inspire, help, and dang it people like you!  So happy for all your success.  P.S.  Love your posts on the Enell blog. Great stuff.

There is no such thing as health or fitness at every/any size.  It is just an excuse not to do what needs to be done.

That’s an incredibly rude and hurtful thing to say to someone.
