Celebrate 2011: 100 pounds recap

December 5, 2011

About Celebrate 2011: This year has been full of ups and downs for me. In January, I certainly didn’t think I’d have health issues and then end up losing less than 20 pounds in the year. It seriously, seriously had me down in the dumps the past few months. Instead of focusing on the pounds lost, I’ve decided to write a few posts celebrating all the great things I did in 2011.

I hit 101 pounds lost on January 24, 2011. I was seriously so excited. I earned every pound and was proud of the lessons I learned about myself. I could manage my food binges. I could work out in a gym. I could finally walk a 5K after periods of being completely sedentary and over 450 pounds. I fully believed (and still do) that one day my body won’t limit what I can do and experience in life.

Every time I get to say that I’ve lost over 100 pounds, I hold my head high. I try my best every day to lead this new healthy lifestyle and continue on the path of fitness no matter what the scale says. So much of the learning about ourselves comes from the failures and knocks that we take, but sometimes the big “woah!” goals help you realize how far you’ve come. I am insanely thankful for 100 pounds left on the gym floor, and for the support I have to continue living my best life.

So tell me 1 thing you did in 2011 that you are celebrating: Big or small, I will give you a virtual “rah rah.” Come on now- I know you’re reading!

This has been quite the year for me! I lost 60 pounds after hitting my all time heaviest last year and having my gallbladder removed 4 days before Christmas. And I RAN my first 5k (in Lexington) on Thanksgiving morning at 27:58! This has been the year that I get my health act together and it’s been SO hard, but SO SO SO worth it!

I completed a 3k and 2 5ks..one was with my dad who is a marathon runner. I’m gonna kick 2012′s butt!!!

I’ve lost over 50 lbs! 50 was always that one number I could never achieve and I’d always gain it back (plus some). I also have lasted longer than six months. 10 months in and I’m at 52.8 and I honestly cannot see myself ever going back!

This year I’m proud of finally asking a doctor for help and admitting I need to fix what is my head in order to be wholly healthy. I’m gradually getting control over binge eating and feeling better about the person I am.

This year I am proud of losing 70 pounds and going from not being able to run .1 of a mile to finishing a 10K this weekend! Hoooorah! And by the way, you were VERY inspirational in it! Also proud of having others be recruited to living healthier! Thanks!

    • http://www.skinnyemmie.com Emily Sandford

WOW! Seriously, how amazing do you feel?!?
And thank you for the kind words :)

  • http://dietschmiet.wordpress.com/ Deb (Schmiet)

It’s been a mixed year for me Em. I lost a good deal of weight early on (about 20kg) in just a few months, but then my father became sick and within a 6 week period he was hospitalised and passed away. I returned to my usual coping mechanisms (unhealthy comfort food and too much wine), though my exercise has continued and I am still much fitter than I once, was, though have only dropped another 5kg in the last 4 or so months.

You’ve had a big year as well, so congratulations for hanging in there despite everything you’ve gone through. HOpefully you’ve got some answers now and can continue on your merry (weight loss and healthy-living) way.
    Deb

    • http://www.skinnyemmie.com Emily Sandford

I’ve been there Deb. When my mom died, I gained 150 pounds. I’m so sorry for your loss. You’re doing great despite everything and you should be so proud

  • Jennifer

Congrats Emmy! Losing 100 pounds is not an easy thing. You should be proud.

I ran a half marathon this year! It’s something I never thought I could do!

    • http://www.skinnyemmie.com Emily Sandford

thank you, and many congrats on your half marathon!

  • LHA

I have made real progress in discovering the psychological causes of my overeating, as well as figuring out the foods my body feels best on that also allows me to lose weight.  There have been a couple of real breakthroughs that changed my ideas about eating drastically!  I am eating way less, am losing weight, and the thing I am proudest of is that I do NOT feel deprived.  That is something I felt was impossible…..losing weight without deprivation.  I have been dieting since I was 6 years old but for the first time I actually think I will not regain the weight.  What a miracle.

Congratulations on your year, Emmie….especially for not giving up when faced with adversity.  Inspiring!

    • http://www.skinnyemmie.com Emily Sandford

Love this: progress in the psychological causing progress in the physical

  • Jules

I got up and ran. I ran through the first week of C25K without giving up at all. And I felt so good about me.

    • http://www.skinnyemmie.com Emily Sandford

woot woot!!! Love to hear this

  • Vicky Louise White

It is a hell of an accomplishment when you think about it. When you equate 100 pounds on something else, and translate that to you, it really drives it home just how far you have come.

You are right to be proud, of course this is a journey, and maybe you still have a way to go yet, but you can only feel good about the achievement you have made. Good for you :)

    • http://www.skinnyemmie.com Emily Sandford

      thank you Vicky :)

  • http://nikkianne.wordpress.com/ nikkianne

I ran 2 5k races! I am so proud so say that! And I LOVE telling people that I’ve lost 50 lbs and I love it when people see my licence and say, “Is that you? You don’t even look like the same person!”

    • http://www.skinnyemmie.com Emily Sandford

      Awesome!!!

  • http://balancingmychemicals.wordpress.com Andie

I’ve lost 57 pounds, as of this morning, since kicking off getting into shape/the rest of my life in mid-June. I’m excited & proud of that, but especially proud that I’ve been able to put myself & my health first. It doesn’t matter who needs me to do what – if it is time for me to go to the gym, I go. If I have to be a pain and ask the waiter for everything on the side, or pack a lunch to eat before I go to a restaurant that won’t accommodate me, I do it. This is how change has happened for me.

Thanks for your amazingly inspirational blog.

    • http://www.skinnyemmie.com Emily Sandford

The focus on YOU has paid off – many congrats!
And thank you for the kind words

  • Superskimme

My big accomplishment this year is not letting injury defeat me. Broke my ankle in May playing the sport I love (roller derby) subsequently gained nearly a stone (14 lbs) from being sedentary while healing, But the whole thing kick started my LCG. I have now lost that stone and more besides (still another 4 stone to go!), I’m back to full strength and improving my game every day! x

    • http://www.skinnyemmie.com Emily Sandford

That’s amazing – you were down, but not out, and came back stronger than ever. I can learn from this!

  • Anonymous

    I hit the 200′s and for a girl 6 lbs from 500, that’s a big deal!

    • http://www.skinnyemmie.com Emily Sandford

      HOLY mackerel! Amazing

  • Ana

I lost 20 lbs and really changed my lifestyle in the last 3 months. I think losing the next 30 will be easier, mentally. My biggest struggle was to get into the mindset of “not a diet, but changing the way I live”.

    • http://www.skinnyemmie.com Emily Sandford

YES, the mindset shift is harder than anything physically for sure.

  • Myla

I found my way back to Zumba and started eating Paleo.

    • http://www.skinnyemmie.com Emily Sandford

      woot woot!!

I took my (then) 13-month old son to Europe for six weeks where we all survived planes, trains, buses, cars, strange beds, hoards of relatives and four countries! If that doesn’t sound like an accomplishment, let me add that the travel time there and back alone was 24 hours each way. Surviving that trip as a little family has told me that we can do anything we want to.

    • http://www.skinnyemmie.com Emily Sandford

      Oh WOW, that’s incredible!

  • http://musingsofmaia.blogspot.com Maia

I’m glad to hear that despite all your frustrations of the past few months you are celebrating your successes!  I can’t wait to see you next week!

I’m celebrating that I hit 75 pounds lost this year.  I didn’t maintain it, but I still hit it.  :)

    • http://www.skinnyemmie.com Emily Sandford

You’re awesome Maia. See you Saturday!

  • Melanie Banner

I just stumbled on your site and I’m so inspired by you!!!  100 pounds, woo hoo!  For 2011, I’m celebrating that I’m on my way to getting in the best shape of my life.  I started a blog 6 months ago or so, HealthyHappyMel.wordpress.com to help keep me motivated and accountable.  I still have 15 or so pounds left to lose, but they don’t seem to want to budge!!

    • http://www.skinnyemmie.com Emily Sandford

Thanks Melanie! Congrats on starting your blog. Those 15 pounds will come off in time. Just enjoy the ride!

  • Kristalhardeman

I had complications after having my son in oct 09. It kept me bed ridden for almost a year and for the following year I avoided scales and doctors. I finally broke down in oct, almost 2 years to the day. I have always been a full size girl. My weight in the 7th grade was 160 but I was super active. I was an athlete all through middle and high school. I was always toned, musclular and energetic. After 2 doctors told my mother that I needed to be on a diet one of the most well known physicians told my mother that I was super healthy and will never be a single size girl. For the next 10 years I lived by this never focusing on the numbers but how I felt inside and out. Well as of May of this year I felt like crap! I couldnt sleep on my back and had problems breathing some nights. I am 30 years old and felt like I was 80. I was always tired and simple things like tieing my shoes was a struggle. I had to make a change. I finally broke down and went to a weight loss clinic with my girl friend. I almost cryed when I saw 437 pop on the screen. I was given some tools that I needed and started my new life. My current weight is 399 as if today (12/7/11). Despite the numbers I feel amazing! I think the biggest high for me is the fact that I am managing my eating and excercise on my own and I am doing it! I havent had a soda in 3 months! I attempted to drink one on thanksgiving, took one drink and gave it to my husband and got a water because it was to sweet! I am trying to book a trip to Florida and was looking at reviews in flying overweight which brought me here to your blog and I am glad it did!

You are an inspiration and I wish you the best in your future. I will be following from now on for sure!

    • http://www.skinnyemmie.com Emily Sandford

Thanks for sharing Kristal, I’m so glad you feel amazing – it’s the most important thing!

You should be VERY proud of how far you’ve come. Don’t diminish your accomplishments so far because you haven’t reached goal yet.

When I reached my first goal of losing 50 pounds I felt SO elated and happy. I was proud of myself and what I’d accomplished in those first 10 months. Sure I still had 50 more to go, but I didn’t let that bring me down or discourage me from continuing what I did. You MUST recognize your journey and each landmark.

    • http://www.skinnyemmie.com Emily Sandford

Thanks Lisa. I’m working on keeping my chin up.

  • http://untypicallyjia.com Untypically Jia

I struggled with a lot of health issues and financial issues that ultimately impacted my weight loss issues. BUT . . .  I did manage to lose 17 pounds this year!

    • http://www.skinnyemmie.com Emily Sandford

Congrats on the 17 pounds – accept them and celebrate them!

  • Tanya Landry

I hit my 100 pound mark on March 12, 2011…it’s been slow going since then, but am proud to say I am now  down 117.4 pounds and am 7.2 pounds from goal!

    • http://www.skinnyemmie.com Emily Sandford

      That’s fantastic, Tanya!

  • http://www.skinnyemmie.com Emily Sandford
