Feel like crap, eat like crap

I’m digging out of my hole today after 4 days of being really sick. I feel like my body just shut down and was refusing to go anymore. In one stretch, I slept 17 of 24 hours and still thought I could sleep another 48. Thankfully, I now have antibiotics in my system and am halfway functioning again.

The bad news is that when I feel like crap, I eat like crap. I didn’t have an appetite for about 48 hours, so what did I eat instead of proper meals? Pieces of pecan pie.

Instead of going to the grocery store to load up on nice paleo foods, I decided that pizza would make everything better (when in fact, it did not).

So now, I’m not only under the weather, but I’m also bloated and kicking myself at the poor food choices I’ve made the past few days. The traditional Thanksgiving grub didn’t help matters either.

Here’s to hoping I have energy tomorrow to drag myself out of bed and get to the grocery store, and then to prepare all the food I’ll need for the week. Blah.

Anyone else find they eat junk when they’re sick? I gravitate towards it like it’s medicine. Blech.

i think we all do it. we’re sick. we need the comfort.

Oh yeah.  That is my biggest problem when I get sick.  Fortunately, I don’t usually get sick too often, but when I do, it’s a freaking food free-for-all.  Every time.

So sorry you are sick!  It is really hard to concentrate on what you are eating when you feel horrible, and whatever is at hand or sounds good is usually what we all go for.  I wonder if our mother’s fed us more sweets or special foods when we were sick?  Are we trying to soothe ourselves in the only way we know how?  I sure caught myself treating my own children to ice cream or baking them rice pudding or brownies when they were sick as children.  Looking back, that certainly seems like a bad idea!

So, Emmie, you are certainly not alone in using food to treat illness.  Good for you for blogging about it and getting the rest of us thinking about it.  This is something I have never really thought about before.  Wishing you a speedy recovery!  I know you will get back to eating better when you feel better too.  Don’t be too hard on yourself….it’s all a part of the journey it seems.

Yep, I’m the same… Sick or hungover (which is really just self-induced sickness). All I want is crap and then I feel like crap and can’t get out of bed except to get more crap. Yuck.
Oh how I wish I could be one of those people who just can’t keep anything down or thinks all food sounds disgusting when they’re ill!
    Hope you’re feeling better soon!

Definitely! I feel so sorry so myself when I am sick that I just want something soothing. One day I will learn that the crappy food I choose just makes me feel worse! I hope you feel better soon

  • Rebecca Sprauer

I’m recovering from the same right now. My problem is that my bad food choices always make me feel MORE sick, but I just keep shoveling them in my mouth because they taste good. FAIL! Hope you get to feeling better soon.

Yes, absolutely.  My mom was not a great cook growing up, so when I was sick she would make chicken-flavored Ramen.  It has now become my comfort food and I need to have it when I’m sick.  It has become even harder now that I no longer eat wheat.  If I have a sore throat, I give myself permission to have as much ice cream as I want.  I have found that having Pho (Vietnamese beef and rice noodle soup- although I know both are on your do-not-eat list!) really helps when I’m sick thanks to all the herbs they put in there.

I definitely eat like crap when I feel like crap. I hope you are feeling better soon!

Oh yeah. The comfort of ‘comfort food’ doesn’t seem to last though, does it? And it doesn’t matter how many times I do it, I never seem to remember that it doesn’t help. Ditto for beating myself up – go easy on yourself :)

Oh my goodness yes! I have been feeling terrible for about two weeks now, and even though I have been trying to focus on portion control I just don’t have the energy to keep up with it and I just eat everything in sight. Maybe that’s why I’m still sick? Isn’t the old wive’s saying that you should starve a cold?

    • Kerri Baruch

I firmly believe in feeding a cold – with loads of raw salads, fruit and veggies. The body has the wisdom to heal itself but it needs our help.

I hope you feel better soon, I’m finally feeling human again after 8 days of being sick!

Kicking yourself won’t help either. Understanding and being compassionate with yourself will…you know being sick won’t last forever, and you are also logging data points along the way. When we don’t feel well, we seek out comfort, which is normal and natural. Eating like crap is the way many of us seek comfort. We now know that food doesn’t equal comfort, but we’re still in the process of learning what does equal comfort. You haven’t undone all your progress…you’ve learned something along the way.

It is an irony that when we feel crap we eat crap! How about a buddy system where a friend could help support you this time with nourishing foods and love? Be well x

I can totally relate. I just want white rice with butter, mashed potatoes, pure mushy comfort food. I’m glad you are getting better. I agree with what everyone said- don’t beat yourself up! Take good care and give yourself some love. It’s hard to go make homemade chicken soup when you’re coughing and feverish and in bed. Sometimes we just eat what we have the energy to find. Take good care!!! oxoxo

This topic I have intimate knowledge of.  Because I so often feel like crap it is a constant struggle to eat well.  In the summer when I feel a little better it is easier.  But as it gets colder and I feel worse I struggle.  I want to feel better but “comfort food” sounds like it will help, right?  Not so much… But every day I strive to make good choices.  Some days better than others ;)  Hope you are feeling better soon!

  • Denise Marie

I totally understand. For me I also get that way when it is the time of the month. I feel very crappy and just eat too much sugar.

  • http://dietschmiet.wordpress.com/ Deb (Schmiet)

Yep… I’m all about the comfort food. ‘I need this.’ Or, ‘I deserve this.’ Any excuse really….

  • Lilyfluffbottom

As soon as I feel a sick coming on, I’m all about being comforted by food. Whether its convenience or habit, its still an excuse. Hope you get well soon.

  • http://www.mayorofthebux.com Danielle

It’s total medicine to me. I think it’s more comfort food. I always want saltines when I’m sick and then that just opens the door for my cracker addiction. ugh. I hope you feel 100%, seems like it’s been a battle. I had some crud at the start of the allergy season that took over a month to kick. seriously frustrating on all accounts.

I think it’s infinitely more difficult to make good choices when I’m feeling miserable.  I really have to do a lot of positive self talk to get myself to eat things that aren’t high cal/fat comfort foods.  Hang in there and feel better!!
