The Biggest Weight Loss Mistake

October 31, 2011

I don’t know about anyone else, but the days go by too fast for my liking! Especially the weekends.

Anyway, one of the big questions I get quite frequently is “what is your advice for people who are trying to lose weight?” I found something on Pinterest (of course) that totally summarizes my answer:

All too often, we wait for the perfect situation before making a big change. If you want to change to living a healthier life, nothing is ever going to be perfect for it. The grocery gods won’t rain down organic greens on your head. The gym won’t have a free membership with a chauffeured car to take you to and fro. Your kids won’t magically be able to watch themselves and not need you morning, noon, and night.

Take the life that you have NOW and make the changes you need to meet your next goal. Stop waiting. Start doing.

Can you identify with this?

I love that quote! It’s so true. There will never EVER be “the perfect time” for anything…just do it!

Honestly I can relate. I remember I was one of those I’ll start tomorrow kind of people, and well I actually still am but I fight it most days.

Amen! Well said. Action always makes you feel better, even a small action.

i totally relate to this..the journey to weight loss isn’t meant to be perfect.. it makes you stronger with its imperfection.. every time i have a bad day as it relates to eating, exercising, i just get back up and hope for a better day tomorrow.

Great post!   I really admire the way you live your life and find it inspiring.  I have put off way too many things in my life waiting for the perfect time.  Seize the day!

Love that!  It’s also important to be happy now.  Weight loss isn’t going to suddenly make you happy.  Find joy in the journey, or the final destination may not be all that it could be.

    and LIFE MISTAKE.

Abso-bloody-lutely! I’ve long been a ‘start my diet on Monday’ kind of gal. Or it’s a ‘start after my holidays’; or even a ‘start after this stressful event is over’ thing.

I just survived some stressful weeks as my father became ill and passed away and I was determined NOT to let go of my healthy eating and exercise TOO much, even though many people told me I’d have a legitimate excuse.

Having said that, I did flounder a little but you are so right… the time will never be perfect, I just need to act!

Sooo true.  For 4 years, I waited for this warrior motivation I had the last time I lost weight and it never came.  The only thing that came in its place was 125 lbs.  Yeah.  You work with what you have and what you can do.  I could only do 7 minutes on my rower when I first got it and broke down in tears from the pain.  The next time I did 8, 10, 13, etc. until I got up to 30 minutes.  I was never going to get where I needed to go growing roots into the couch.

    SO TRUE.
I think I spent the greater part of my adolescence/early adulthood living by the “when X happens, then I’ll start” motto. AND, on the flip side, I’ve spent my life waiting to take chances in other areas (work, romance, social life, etc) for when I’m “skinny.” How crazy is that? Waiting to start, waiting for results, waiting to LIVE. It’s such a vicious cycle, and one I’m proud to say is behind me.

Simple advice, but so so true.

(ps – how perfect is everything on pinterest? haha. I find so many of my life’s motto’s hiding there)

I def can identify with this.  I have two small children and I have to make time to exercise.  thankfully I have an awesome husband who helps me.

Yes I can! Perfection is a cruel master. I have been on a weight loss journey for about 3 years, so my issue isn’t waiting for conditions to be perfect to start, but following my plan perfectly to continue to lose weight. Realistically, though, it won’t happen every week. But over the course of three years there are enough times that I’ve made the right decisions that the scale number keeps going down–and I learn more about myself and why I’m motivated to eat well or poorly in the process. That’s all that matters in the end.
