Post Vacation Weight Verdict

September 7, 2010

So now that I’ve posted my vacation recaps, you’re probably wondering: “how much did she gain?” It’s okay, I would probably be thinking the same thing also!

Let’s go through how I did with regards to my pre-vacation plan:

  • What I said: “This week does not have regularly scheduled exercise. ” What I did:  Well, no unplanned structured workouts crept up, however we used the stairs tons, had our strenuous jet skiing adventure, did lots of walking on the ship and in Key West. Much more active than my normal sedentary job at work.
  • What I said: “Drinks. I love a good bit of alcohol. I will have a couple of drinks per day, in moderation.” What I did: On average, I had 4 drinks per day. Mainly Michelob Ultra, except in Cozumel where I drank Corona and local beer Pacifico. I had 2 dirty martinis on the trip also.
  • What I said: Food. I honestly am not too scared about the food… there should be plenty of options to where I can make proper choices without much guilt. What I did: Food was pretty right-on. I ate low-carb and tried to limit my portions- something I’m not accustomed to doing at a buffet! As expected, they had tons of options, including a sugar free dessert option every night- drool, seriously. The only carbs I ate were those in Cozumel where I had chips with guacamole. Oh, and one slice of bread with dinner one night. I was a little worried about the sugar free desserts- they had sugar free cookies that were amazing, and I did overeat them on the second to last night.
  • What I said: Weighing. I will not weigh the week after the cruise. Maybe two weeks. What I did: Who am I kidding, you guys know I can’t stay off the scale! Seriously though, I really felt good with my choices. Hubs gained 5 pounds, but he admitted he ate more than he planned (he’s not on a diet, just tries to keep his eating in check). I anticipated gaining 5 pounds also, and even if it was more than that, just appreciate the great time I had and get back into my routines and bust it off.

Also, added bonuses with the trip- I also was able to cross the following items off of my 101 in 1001 list:

  • Go karaoke-ing
  • Ride on a boat
  • Go dancing
  • Wear something sleeveless
  • Go to the beach
  • Take a tropical vacation with my husband
  • Wear a swimsuit without complete shame

The results? 0 pounds lost and 0 pounds gained!!! I stayed exactly the same. I did a double take with the scale and then reset it and got back on to verify I wasn’t dreaming.

My self-photo of ultimate bliss on a jet ski, taken with a disposable waterproof camera- don't judge :)

I went on a vacation with tons of food and temptations. I did not feel deprived. I was not drooling over food or calculating how much I could fit on a buffet plate. I was active and didn’t moan or groan if we had to take 3 flights of stairs because the elevators were running slow. I didn’t get winded walking around Key West, and I wasn’t sore after Jet Skiing. I did not partake in fruity, sugary drinks with umbrellas, but yet I didn’t withhold from any festivities. Is this what it’s like to have a normal, healthy relationship with your body? Because I haven’t ever felt so in-control in what could be an out-of-control environment. I haven’t ever felt like I could make these kinds of decisions without feeling deprived or left out of any fun.

Does this make any sense?

WOOHOO! Glad you maintained. I am never expecting to lose weight on vacations, but if I maintain–I’m happy!

That’s awesome! But even if you had gained, so what? It’s a new day and life goes on, right?

Still really proud of you for doing so well.I gained 6 pounds on my honeymoon and I loved every ounce of them while they were going in. ;)

Great stuff!! Emmie! I want to take my wife on a cruise soon. BTW it’s amazing what you can conjure up on a buffet when you know how to choose the right foods. Congrats!!!

Love the blog, started reading it a few weeks ago!

When I saw the pic I just had to share a terrible fat-person moment… I took my friends jetski (a small one) and tore accross the lake for a solid 30 minutes. Then I wiped out and for the life of me COULD not get back on, after about 20 minutes they came on a boat and rescued me.

Was able to get back on it a year later though =D

You ROCK! I don’t think I’ve ever been on vacation without a gain. I can’t answer the normal, healthy relationship with food question…I def don’t have one!
