A blog is like fat camp

July 14, 2010

FYI, this is a totally random post. But whatevs…

I just caught up with the 2nd episode of Huge, and I actually am kind of enjoying it.  I have literally been there, at fat camp, at those kids ages. Although, my fat camp was WAY more posh than theirs. No cabins and mini trampolines for workouts. Multi-million dollar fitness facility where the Chargers used to train, and lived in some of the nicest college dorms I still do this day have seen.  That is neither here nor there though- the similarities are still abundant. Girls and guys trying to hook up with each other, people “dealing” junk food, cattiness of a bunch of hormonal girls in the same place, crushing over camp staff- it’s enough to make me want to be a teenager again :)

The best thing about fat camp though, is that everyone is in the same boat with you. You’re all there to accomplish something- weight loss, fitness, looking hot, whatever. You all take similar paths to reach the end of the summer. Some might choose circuit training and others might choose basketball, but you’re all working towards the same thing. You’re surrounded by like-minded people all struggling with the same thing, and in the solace of (hopefully) well-intended counselors and advisors to help you going in the right direction.

In this sense, a blog is like fat camp. The people who read and tweet and share their struggles, questions, stories, and even critiques (see my Eats page if you want to see people second guessing my food program) are all in the same boat. We may all be at different spots in the journey, but we’re all still here, trying to make the correct choices day in and day out. We see this possibility that our lives can be better, and in our own ways, have this pact of mutual respect and understanding for the struggles and the triumphs.

So, I just want to say “thank you” for being in this boat with me. This is my “safe place” to get everything out, and to share whatever is going on. I think of it as some form of fatty therapy, and I’m so glad you guys are my counselors :)

I always wanted to go to fat camp. I thought it would be the solution to all my problems. Unfortunately, my family could never afford it. Huge has really opened up a whole set of possibilities that I had never even considered before. What if the dating field was level? How different might I be now? How much the same would I be?

Oh well. I'll keep watching. I'm waiting for the train wreck, but I don't see it coming.

it totally is. I feed off the moods of others too. I am encouraged and uplifted sometimes when I hear of others triumphs. and I will even admit I get jealous of others successes when mine don't mirror or are less than stellar. So can I be one of the cool kids then?

I have been a lurker on your blog for some time Emmie, I have really enjoyed it and related so much to your struggles with the scale, pitting edema, and of course FAT CAMP! I was so mad at my dad for sending me to fat camp when I was a teenager but it turned out to be the best experience ever! Filled with hijinx, sneaking off to get junk food, bribing kids on the outside to get us pizza, and then putting the greasy pizza boxes in front of the camp director's door for her to see the next day, to many other naughty things along the way. Oh Camp La Jolla how I've missed you!!

Well today the scale brought me VICTORY, 100 pounds lost! FINALLY I got to this point!!!

Thanks again for your inspiration and continued good luck on the rest of your journey, I will be there right along with you : )
