The First Cut is the Deepest

June 6, 2010

Ah, Sunday. A day of resting and relaxing.

Usually my Sunday’s consist of drinking a lot of coffee, reading a book, cleaning the house, doing laundry. I typically try to get up early(ish) on Sunday’s, but today was a completely different story. I feel like such a slacker! I slept in until 12:40! 12:40! For real? And then when I got up, my legs were screaming at me from yesterday’s session with Rob. I didn’t even do anything really strenuous! Goes to show how out of shape I am.

After eating some late lunch and hopping on the computer to shoot off a few outstanding emails (outstanding as in late, not great), I went to Lexington Athletic Club to do my workout. My legs were still screaming at me. I did my warm up and then set off to do my 60 minutes of cardio in my low range. This ended up being me on a treadmill going pretty slow (2.4 at a 2.5 incline), but I tried really hard not to feel self conscious next to the runners and crazies whose legs were churning on the elliptical. The first 15 minutes were boring, but then an episode of Hoarders: Buried Alive came on one of the TVs in the cardio theater, so I was set. Even though I had planned on moving to a bike or elliptical at some point during my 60 minutes, the show sucked me in and before I knew it, it was time to go.

Now, a couple hours later, my legs are still burning! I feel like such a wimp. They are so tight- my hamstrings especially. I guess getting started is the hardest part.

How was your weekend? Do anything exciting?

Awesome! I remember that first burn, oh so well! The important thing is that you went back for another dose! Don't you feel accomplished?! You should! You could've sat on the couch and watched Hoarders, but you didn't! I was a size 30 at Christmas and I just bought a size 20 pair of shorts! Last time I wore shorts I think I was in high school (13 years ago)! It is slow going at first, but you will be surprised at how you transform!! Have you watched Food Inc? It is a great documentary about where our food comes from! I also read Master Your Metabolism and The Omnivore's Dilemma and they have changed the way I think about food. I was a junk food junkie! You can do it! Baby steps!

I cannot stress enough how awesome Foam Rollers are. Seriously! Spend $20 and get one. I do it every night and it makes all the difference.

Ow ow ow my quads hurt in sympathy ;) The most important (and awesome) thing is that you got up and went back. It's probably gonna be slow going to get started, the sore is gonna be there, the tired, but it's worth it for sure in the end. It is soooo worth it :)

And forget about those folks goin crazy on the treadmill or whatever – you're there for you. Phrase of the day – “Run your own race,” even if you're walkin it :) Everyone starts somewhere…the point is you started! And you're continuing…sooner or later you'll be unintentionally intimidating someone else ;)

    Go Emmie, go!

Thanks Cathy- that will have to be my new motto: “run your own race” Love it!

Ooh, I saw someone using one of those today but didn't know what it was called. I must get one!!

    Thanks Emilie! You've made amazing progress- a 30 to a 20? Nuts!
I have watched part of Food Inc. Haven't read the other 2 books, but will check them out. My food isn't something i worry about- I eat very little processed food, and all my meats and stuff are hormone free. I'm just lazy by nature, so getting up and going to the gym is such a big chore. Hoping to make it more of something I look forward to, not something I dread.

I am so super proud of you for continuing to go back even when you're sore and you slept late and etc etc etc. I'm going to adopt “run your own race.” For the first time in many years, it's going to be ALL ABOUT ME!
Oh, and I did join the Y today. Me and my kids. Hooray!

You. Are. Awesome! Kudos on getting up (late) and still getting your butt in the gym. You made it! One day at a time. Keep that fire burning :) I'm pulling for you!

    Yes, but don't overdo it!

And let me clarify my own comment…I speak from experience, and I ended up really, really hurting and very worried that I'd sprained a muscle or torn a ligament. So just be careful!

Sure thing! That's one of my biggest reasons for working with a trainer- I need someone to make sure I don't hurt myself!

    Thanks Sara, I appreciate it!

That's so awesome you guys joined the Y, Sarah! And yes it is “ALL ABOUT YOU!” Nothing wrong with being a lil selfish.
