This thing called “the gym”

May 29, 2010

So… with the Get Emmie Skinny program now underway, I will be doing some vlogging to record and track my weight loss and workout progress. I will continue blogging as usual, just now there will be more videos on the site to explain more about what kind of activities I’m doing, interviews with trainers or fitness professionals, etc.

This morning, I went to this place. It was this big, huge building. When I entered it, I had the odd sense of deja vu. Once inside, I asked the man at the counter what this place was… and he said it was a GYM.

Seriously- it’s been forever since I’ve worked out. Yet today, I took the first step to becoming a healthier Emmie.

Check it out:

To see what Zumba is, here’s a video from YouTube. Not the class I went to- just some random class, but the moves are the same:

LOL. I know I'm going to get a bunch of people going “big effing deal! I go to the gym every day!”

Congrats on making through day one at the gym. I'm glad you had a good time. It's cool to see you in video also :) Take care!

So great that you went to the gym!!!!Congratulations!!! I try and go 3-4 times a week and some days it is a real effort but I always feel better when I go!!!!

Today was my first day going to a gym…ever! And I went to a Zumba class! Like you, I tried it before and loved it, so I knew I had to do it again! I was so nervous, too, and I wondered if anyone was looking at me! After a while, though, I just stopped worrying about everyone else and enjoyed the music. It's so ironic reading this, because how you felt is EXACTLY how I felt, lol! I can't wait to go back!

I actually went to the Y today to get information to sign up. How funny that we're all doing this at the same time~

These classes look great fun Emmie, great choice! I'd love to try this even though I would be completely uncoordinated *lol*.. will take a look out for them in the UK. Thanks for your inspiring blog :) Sarah.

So proud of you Emmie! And yes it IS a big effing deal! I know its sounds strange, but after a while you may actually start to crave going to the gym….I know its my decompression time from craziness in life. Fantastic job!

  • http://www.skinnyemmie.com skinnyemmie

I hope I start craving going to the gym, that'd be fantastic!

Thanks Sarah! These classes are EVERYWHERE. You can check out the Zumba website for a class finder. http://search.zumba.com/en/classes/international

That's awesome! Are you joining? I think it's great we're all doing this at the same time- it gives us all a way to connect and encourage each other, and kick each others butts if we start to slack!

  • http://www.skinnyemmie.com skinnyemmie

    Thanks Chris!

  • http://www.skinnyemmie.com skinnyemmie

Thanks for the encouragement Candy! My minimum is going to be 3x a week, with a goal of 4x a week. You have permission to nag me if I don't do it!

  • http://www.skinnyemmie.com skinnyemmie

At one point I looked at everyone else in the class and thought “i might be the biggest one here (by far), but at least I have some sort of rhythm!” Not that I was judging some of the less coordinated people, but it gave me “permission” to stop stressing out over it so much.

Hey Emmie! I've been following along (quietly!) for a few months, but had to chime in now because I've just spent the last five months on that very same road — getting reacquainted with the gym and the idea of working out, taking classes like Zumba, etc. I started out at a size 24 and just slipped into an 18 this month.

So I wanted to encourage you, because it definitely does make a big difference! Like Brandess said, if you go enough, you start craving being at the gym, and then it's ON. Can't wait to hear how it goes!

Wow, a 24 to an 18? That's amazing! Thanks for reading (I'm a fan of your blog) and for the encouragement. I hope I can get to where I start craving the gym- that would really be a bigger triumph than the weight loss in some respects.

Yes, I'm definitely going to join. Along with my husband (who refuses to work out, but says he'll come with me for moral support when he's home…he's a truck driver) and my three kiddos. I even picked up the swim schedule for the classes, and they have them at 9:30 (which I can't do, I'm working) and 6pm. And after the swim, they have Zumba. They also have Pilates and Yoga, which is all included in the price of the yearly membership. I can't make every single class of course, but I'm hoping there is enough to keep me and all three kids occupied. My 14 year old daughter really wants the Yoga. My 13 year old son says he's ready to “trade my moobs for pecs” and my little one says he just wants to get taller. (ummmm, ok.) Family health project, on it's way!

Yay way to go! I have been running and using my elliptical. I am hoping to join back up with a gym after my Half Marathon this weekend.

Hey Emmie, didn't watch the first video but saw the Zumba video and you totally inspired me…. I just googled to see if they have any classes near me, and they do! So I've set my facebook profile to see if any ladies want to join me on my venture. Hurrah!
