Swimming for Weight Loss

May 30, 2010

Check out what I did today! I actually went to the gym AGAIN. After yesterday, I thought I would be mega-sore and tired, but I felt pretty good. What is Memorial Day weekend without a pool, anyway?

I’m glad I got in the pool. I know there are others out there who go to the pool also for weight loss (like blogger friend Stephen), so let me know what you guys do in the pool.

Seriously, my body feels soooo tired. I had to run to the grocery store to pick up some stuff to make low-carb faux-tato salad for a cookout tomorrow and it took everything I had to not walk at the pace of a snail.

On my 101 in 1001 list, I have “Swim 1/2 a mile” and “Swim 1 mile.” I didn’t realize how close I came to 1/2 a mile today. Makes me feel like my goals are attainable.

Hope you all are having a great weekend!

It's awesome to see how close you came to your distance goal, you'll hit it in no time! … I'd love to add swimming to my workout weight loss regimen, this Summer! Step 1: Err, Learn how to swim, lol. ;o)

Hey Emily! I used to be a competitive swimmer too! I didn't see any butterfly on your video! ;) I usually write up a workout for me and my friends to do in the pool…..like 100 warmup, 10×50 @ 1:30minutes, 5×100 @ 3:00minutes, 2×200 easy pace/no time, 6×25 sprints with 20sec rest and a 100 cool down. You could throw in some exercises like catch-up, fist, open fingers, skulling….

Props to you girlfriend! I am coming to Louisville in August to watch my cousins do the Ironman!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!! I seriously got all emotional watching your video! You probably think I'm crazy… let me explain. I have RA, and can't workout much because of it. I knew swimming would be good for me, but the whole thought of going to a gym to swim, freaked me the heck out! Saturday night, I faced my fears, and got the gym membership!…. first part's done, now I just have to get in the pool! I'm having all this anxiety over it! When I went to the gym to sign up, there were a whole bunch of dudes in the pool! That added to my anxiety. Then I realized that like, now matter where you are in the gym, you can see the pool, and the people in it! That pretty much just made things worse, lol. So, all weekend I've been trying to give myself the confidence to get in the pool! Seeing your video was seriously just what I needed! I can do this! Thanks!

    I hope you don't think I'm nuts! ;D

You mean to brave my fat head in a swim cap and show me swimming? Just kidding Tina :) Thanks for the encouragement!

Fun, thanks! I'll have to do it sometime this week!

Thanks! Even if you don't know how to swim, it's awesome to just get in the water and do some water jogging or kicking or whatever.

Funny you mention butterfly- the 100 butterfly used to be my specialty! I'm too scared to attempt it at this point, but sometime soon! I haven't tried my flip turns either…
I love the idea of having a workout like that. The workout you posted is a little too aggressive for me at this point, but maybe I'll try to design one that's a little easier and work from there. I like having a plan instead of just going in and swimming like I did yesterday.
I didn't realize there was an Ironman in Louisville coming up! Maybe I should go and film some of it for inspiration. I want to do a tri someday…

No Brittany, you're not nuts at all!!! I had EXACTLY the same anxieties about who would be in the pool, if it would be crowded, how people would react to me, etc. At some point you have to just say “screw it” and do it. As I mentioned in my video, there was a guy in the lane next to me who asked what my videocamera was. I told him what it was and what it was for, and he was really supportive and encouraging. People surprise you sometimes!
Honestly, I'll probably continue to have the same anxieties as you, it's just a matter of us overcoming them and realizing that WE have to do what's best for US, otherwise, we do nothing but harm ourselves.
Let me know how it goes!!!

I've always had bad experiences with actual swimming (not playing in the water) so I congratulate you! And I love this: “It makes me feel like my goals are attainable.” I have a very hard time setting goals…and I want to get better at it…you're a good role model for me :-)

Wow girl I am so impressed! There is something about putting your workout videos out there that makes you feel free. At least that's how it's been for me. Plus, being able to look back and see the progress is a wonderful thing. Keep up the great work!
