The Lane Bryant Ad Controversy

April 22, 2010

So, I’m sure you’ve heard the news about FOX and ABC refusing to air the new TV spot for Lane Bryant’s Cacique line of intimate apparel (the only bras and underwear I’ll buy), featuring my wanna-be-body, Ashley Graham. The hubbub is that people say there are more risque things on these networks and they don’t censor Victoria’s Secret ads featuring lingire, so it MUST be because Ashley Graham is more voluptuous.

I’m holding out on passing judgement until FOX and ABC release their statements on WHY they blocked this (I’ve seen Terri Hatcher in less than this on Desperate Housewives). There is a slight twinge of criticism in me (I do have a degree in advertising, so kinda know what I’m talking about) that the spot they wouldn’t air could be misconstrued as a woman in lingire going to meet up with a paying customer. But still, they show Pretty Woman on TV all the time, and prostitution isn’t blocked from shows like CSI or Law and Order.

Anyway, I wanted to post these not to jump in the mix of criticisms, but just to show how effing beautiful Ashley Graham is. If I looked like her, I would feel like a Skinny Emmie for sure.

Edited to add: Response I just saw from Plus Model Magazine- ABC says Lane Bryant made it all up! See, thus why I’m waiting for the full story.

Update: 4/26: For those interested, the Lane Bryant response to ABC’s denial of the dispute is here. Fox will be airing the ad several times during American Idol coming up, so they’re trying to “make good.”

That is pretty damn sexy. As to whether it should be shown or not…*shrug* I guess I need to see their reasoning too. It’s pretty steamy though. I rarely feel all… uh… is it hot in here??? about VS ads.

Whaaa? I don’t get it. I, too, want to see what they have to say about this.

I don’t get it. She is beautiful and REAL. Its not OK to see a woman with curves in what basically amounts to a bikini, but it is OK for ESPN to air those Ashley Madison commercials. Nice.

What Alie said. Had that been Paris Hilton, it would have been shown, no questions asked. I just watched the ad…I’ve seen less skin at the local high school football game. The ad is classy, beautiful, and relevant to many, many women.
Is Ashley Graham not just gorgeous!

Hey Emmie – Put your degree work and you’ll find that Lane Bryant put out press release that showed an excerpt from an ABC memo explicitly stating what LB alleged.

It was ABC who lied — not Lane Bryant.

BTW – Fox has kissed and made up with LB, giving them a better time slot and an apology.

Karen- Hopefully you aren’t implying that I’m not on Lane Bryant’s “side.” I’ve blogged praise of them before, and was featured on their Inside Curve website. I put this blog post up on April 22, and Lane Bryant didn’t respond with the ABC information until April 23, so apologies I didn’t update it- I haven’t been on the blog since then.
