Help Emmie Get Skinny!

April 29, 2010

EDIT: PAGE FOR “GET EMMIE SKINNY” IS HERE- CHECK OUT VIDEO, AND SEND TO FRIENDS!

To get out of being bummed that The Biggest Loser didn’t pick me for season 10, I want to create my own Biggest Loser or Ruby-type environment. What does this mean? Well, I do pretty good on food. My good friend Lizzie is a caterer and she does a fantastic job of helping me break out of the rut with low-carb deliciousness. I also can do pretty well myself in making sure my food is on-pointe.

My big problem is exercise.

I’m very big. VERY big. Not as big as I used to be, but still, morbidly obese- very big!

I want to assemble a collection of methods, trainers, groups and/or gyms to help me discover exercise. Back in the day (when I was 18), I was an aerobics instructor. I taught kickboxing and step aerobics at fat camp. Yes, I was 220 pounds, but damn I was healthy. I could teach 3x a day, no problem. I want to get back to that shape.  I NEED YOUR HELP.

There are SO MANY programs and activities I’d like to try in my quest to become fit. I need help busting these excuses:

  • Someone my size can’t do that
  • Oh my gosh the instructor/trainer will laugh their ass off at me
  • People are going to judge me
  • I’ll die if I try to do that

Even more so, I want to BUST these excuses for others out there. I want to show them that they can do it too. The whole “if I can do it, you can do it” adage would never ring so true.

I need people to help me make this happen.  Gyms, trainers, fitness professionals, friends. I NEED YOU.

What I don’t have? Buckets-of-money to join all these places and to assemble a team. I can’t budget several hundred dollars a month on this project.

What I do have?

  • Lots of readers: I would blog about the business/trainer/gym/activity. I will link your site and your information in my blog posts. What I can’t do is lie. I retain full control over the content and reviews.
  • Twitter followers: Over 1500 of them that will see your posts and your name when I’m publishing the blog posts
  • A Flip Video camera: If you want, we can even videotape part of the session/activity and do a short interview. I will edit the video and post with the blog post. I will put it on YouTube to enhance your search engine results
  • PASSION. I have passion. I want this. I need this. This is YOUR opportunity to show the world your talents as a gym/trainer/instructor/fitness guru

I want a team. I want people who WANT to help others. I want people who will commit to helping me for more than one time. This is no “wham-bam-thank-you-mam” deal. I know that time=money, but please consider the value of the exposure over just cold, hard cash.

What else do I need? Fat Buddies! Ok, so you don’t have to be fat. You just have to want to help. How can you help?

  • Join the program and at least once weekly comment on what you did to improve your fitness, or link to a blog post explaining what you did
  • General encouragers- sometimes an “atta girl” goes a long way
  • Advocates- people to help me spread the word locally to get trainers/gyms/etc to want to help me

Things I’ve wanted to try:

  • Regular personal training sessions
  • Pilates
  • Pure Barre
  • Yoga
  • Spinning
  • Dancing
  • Different gyms
  • A boot camp
  • Boxing
  • Kettlebells
  • TRX training
  • Training like an athlete- sports endurance and such

I know I’m asking a lot. This could go over like a big thud. Who knows.

If you’re a fitness provider/company offering services in the Lexington, KY area who wants more info on this program, visit this page on my site and fill out the form. I will contact you to open up a conversation of what kind of arrangement we can make.

If you’re someone who is willing to cheer me on and be a “Fat Buddy” (or unfat buddy), PLEASE COMMENT below! I want to show fitness practitioners that we have an army of people who are cheering for this to work.

Muchas gracias- xoxo

Hello Emmie, I’ve been an RSS reader for a while, this is my first time commenting :) I’m in a similar situation as you, I think, but have recently joined a gym and have been having a hard time pushing myself (mentally) at the gym. When I’m there I’m in a constant state of worry about what the other people are thinking about me. It’s really hard to get a good workout in when all I want to do is leave.

I’d be willing to be an internet Fat Buddy if this gets off to the ground. I’ve been following a few trainers on twitter lately, I can check to see if any of them might be interested in stopping by to give some advice or whatever. Anyhow, good luck and I’ll be sure to check in soon.

Hey Chris! I follow you on Twitter!
Who knows if this thing will get off the ground, but in any case, I’d love if you’d want to write a guest post or something sometime- a dude’s perspective on fat. I know you have your own blog, but it might be fun!
We’ll see how this experiment goes… fingers crossed for some momentum…

I’ll be your “fat buddy!” My husband and I have been doing South Beach (mostly) since August and P90X (kinda regularly) since October. We’ve hit a real dry spell in regard to motivation. Hopefully we’ll get back into our workout routine soon, but it’s been hard. Maybe we can be mutually motivating and work toward our goals! Good luck!

I’m open for whatever, I’m doing my own reaching out and trying to find other people to communicate with because I really want to kick this this extra person I’m carrying around to the curb. I’m really interested in Kettlebells, Boxing and maybe Spinning. One major problem I have is that I live in a pretty small town, the gym doesn’t have Kettlebells or Spinning bikes for instance, so I’m looking at purchasing some Kettlebells as soon as I can afford them.

I also have a lot of emotional baggage I’m trying to deal with, I’m pretty shy and quiet and introverted, which makes navigating through all of this even more complicated.

I’m finally de-lurking to say I want to be a fat buddy!! Great idea.

My best advice for pilates is to get the Beginning Mat Workout from Gaiam, featuring Ana Caban. She explains everything really well and there is someone there with her doing all of the modified moves. It lets you do what you can do and you eventually gain the strength and flexibility to do more and more.

Try belly dancing! :) Yes you can do it, especially if a big girl like me can do it, and do it well. lol I’ve had a really great teacher who believes that no matter what size you can be beautiful and dance. Unfortunately time & money keeps me out of class right now but she has dvds to keep me company. You can see clips of her dvds on youtube, I think under mediaamor or amira mor.

Oh and if you try boxing, make sure you get a really good trainer who has experience with working with larger people. My trainer, while well intentioned pushed me too hard and I strained my shoulder and could barely move it for months (and it was darn painful too!).

    Hi, Emmie!

YOU GO GIRL, and take me with you.. please. I’m a fat girl who has lost and gained a million times. Currently, I am on the verge of waddling. I know that regular/hardcore exercise is key for me to lose/maintain a healthful/positive ME. I’m tired of being down on myself and hating to look in the mirror.

Suffice it to say, I’m inspired by your posts, and your “never give up” philosophy. You are definitely inspiring me to move in the right direction.

Go for it Emmie! I’ve got the opposite problem – I never have trouble keeping up with exercise but I suck with food. I seriously think you’ve got 70% of the battle won on that front.

I’m a runner and a regular Pure Barre follower. The classes are kind of expensive but I use the DVD, and studio time when I can to keep my form in shape. Our Lexington PB studio is wonderful – the instructors and women that attend are very friendly, open and encouraging – they want you to succeed. If you would ever like to attend a session with someone you know, drop me a line and I’ll be more than happy to go with. Otherwise I’ll just keep cheering from the sidelines.

I love dance classes – I had an awesome pole dancing instructor who taught me to do what I could and then work around the difficult moves (eg, the inverted holds, lol). I’ve done belly dancing and hip hop and Latin and Hawaiian; and I still want to try jive. Despite doing this in the dance studios, I just can’t work up the nerve to go to the gym – too self-conscious, too much pressure, not enough time. Frankly, I worry that I wouldn’t have the stick-to-itness that would justify spending the money. I walk my dogs for an hour a day but I know a big issue for me is simply that I don’t move enough. So, I bought a Wii Fit a couple weeks ago and I am loving it! There is a weight restriction on the box, but that is a software issue that can be worked around; the board itself can handle up to 650lb. I love that I can do it whenever I have time, and that I’m at home (I feel guilty enough leaving my dogs for 8-9 hours a day while I’m at work). It’s a fun way to get me moving and the moderate physical activity will hopefully help me to get my weight down (4lb so far!). It will probably never get me toned enough to do those inverted holds, but it’s a start. More than anything I need a way to work exercise into my days.

    Good luck to you Emmie!

Hi, Emmie, a friend directed me to your blog ’cause he knows I teach group fitness classes. I teach a lot of the higher-intensity classes at Urban Active Palumbo (cardio kickboxing, triple fit, jump & jab, Turbo Kick. I also teach/taught other things including water aerobics, Power Playt, and TRX). I can tell you that Turbo Kick is the most fun and most intense group fitness class you can possible take and I highly recommend it to get in shape. It’s a dancier style of kickboxing choreographed to really high-energy and fun music.

I can get you some guest passes to the gym, but I’m just a contracted instructor at Urban Active so I can’t offer you a free gym membership. But I thought I’d throw the suggestion out there if you wanted to try it out/approach them yourself.

Hi Emmie, I found your blog through Twitter and am really proud that you are willing to do this publicly! Although I am not a fitness professional, I have lost 25lbs by just going to the gym, taking a spin class and not caring. I know it's easier said then done, but I believe that if you have the power to want to do it, then you have the power to do it. Maybe start off low key by listening to music and just dancing around your house/bedroom like you don't have a care in the world! You'll feel like a free spirit! I believe you can do this. If you set your heart to it, it'll get done! I consider myself a gym rat and am willing to be your internet “fat buddy” if you want. You can do this, I know you can! :)

    Emily,

I watched the video and think you should call Kim Davis at the High Street YMCA. She is awesome. I wish I had her email but I don't.

  • Xoreds

have you ever tried Turbo Jam? I love it and my friend Sarah aka (@strych on twitter) has lost almost 35 lbs over the past 5 months…its so fun and even better it goes by really fast…now in all honesty I do sell it its a home DVD…but whatever I love it and think its very doable for all fitness levels…Chalene Johnson is so motivating and inspiring…I dont know what kind of instructor you like but I find her to be very special and someone who celebrates ever effort (as long as you make one) like dont worry even mistakes burn calories

I saw that you have taught and tried kickboxing,..its sorta like that…anyway just thought I would throw it out there!
