Last weekend I read Ruby’s Diary: Reflections on All I’ve Lost and Gained. Y’all know how much I love Ruby. We’re talking girl crush levels. I want to be her best friend because sometimes it seems she’s the only one in this world who has been as large as I’ve been and whose had to experience the same things I have. I wrote her book publisher to see if she could come do an autograph signing at Joseph-Beth, but no luck.
I love being able to watch Ruby’s journey on the Style Network every week, and have bought her first season DVD. When I bought the book, I was expecting to find more insight into the personal side of Ruby- the part that the TV camera’s don’t show. There was a little of that, but a lot of it were her journal entries from events that we all experienced with her on TV, and the novelty was worn off (like when Denny asked her to go see Rascal Flatts or when she revealed to Dr. Brewerton that she couldn’t remember her childhood). There were a few more insights into Ruby’s life though- she has a few siblings and more friends than what we see on the show. She’s not always happy-go-lucky (or “hacky”- hacky-wacky as she says). She didn’t originally want to be on a TV show and show the world her life. I applaud her bravery for showing her weight and struggles on the scale on national TV.
Anyway, if you’re a fan of Ruby, I recommend the book. If you’re not, I’m not sure how much of an interesting read it will be. It’s truly a journal, not a “how Ruby lost weight and you can too” book.
