PETA FAIL WHALE

August 18, 2009

I’m not a very angry person.  I don’t talk smack or get all rowdy up on people. But then I saw this:

WTF!!!

WTF!!!

WTF!?!?!? Seriously. OH. HELL. NO. *insert finger snaps*

Today, PETA unveiled this billboard in Jacksonville, FL along with the announcement on their blog, stating:

For most of us, summer is fading fast, but for residents of Jacksonville, Florida, bikini season lasts all year. What does the Sunshine State’s endless summer mean for PETA? Our phone lines ring off the hook with reports of “beached whale sightings.” Good one, guys.

Luckily, we know the secret to getting—and maintaining—a killer beach bod. Did you know that vegetarians are 20 to 30 percent leaner than meat-eaters? So, to help residents and tourists “lose the blubber”—and hopefully to deter prank callers—we’re launching a brand-new billboard urging people to go vegetarian

MOTHER. TRUCKERS.

First, how did I lose 150 pounds by eating mainly meat? How have I lost another 30 more just now by eating mainly meat? How come I know overweight vegetarians??? Of course, I know thin vegetarians also (size 0 sister), but they have ALWAYS been thin- whether a vegetarian or not!!!

I’m a marketer, so maybe I’ll calm down for a second to try to rationalize this from that standpoint. *tick* *tick* *tick* Um, can’t rationalize it! What does making people thinner have to do with PETAs mission??? Why would they want to risk offending many vegetarians and current PETA supporters by doing something this offensive? Because “no press is bad press?” BULLSHIT on that one PETA. You’ll get lots of blog posts mentioning you, but it’s doing nothing but hurting you. Instead of a bunch of insane animal activists, PETA is now a bully to overweight people. Shame shame shame.

How to take action:

  • Post your own blog post about this urging action
  • Tweet @officialpeta and let them know how you feel
  • Leave a post on their blog expressing your distaste (you’ll have to put up with ignorant other people though- Ignore them)

  • What an F'N slap in the face! I am re-posting this with a link back to you and PETA about making a movement to force them make a PUBLIC apology and be forced to rip that Mother Truck-in thing down. WHAT THE OH LIVEN CRACKERS MAN!

Wait lets get a WHOLE BUNCH OF FAT BEAUTIFUL WOMEN (US) And go sit in front of their door steps and eat and grill chicken breast. If we just go get a right to picket at the city we certainly can do this legally. Peta constantly makes a stand why shouldn't we. I live in GA I will GLADLY drive my fat butt down there and stand again that!
  • I appreciate the passion, but this post was from august of 2009- they've pulled the ads since!
  • Wow. I'm not really easily offended, but this is ridiculous. It's just another case of fat-shaming -- and I can't see how that relates to the defense of animals. I don't see how it's any different than using a photo of African Americans and saying "save the chickens from the frying pan!" It blows my mind that society is quick to speak out against discrimination and stereotyping about most things (which is good), but when it comes to bias against the overweight, there are no rules.

As an aside, I was a vegan and then vegetarian for the better part of the last few years, and I GAINED weight. Granted, toward the end I was not doing it healthfully and basically eating an all-carb diet, but still. Vegetarianism does not equal thin. It wasn't until I started incorporating some lean meats (chicken and fish) back into my diet that I was able to lose weight again.

  • Hey Es- here's an update to the whole story- they took the billboard down, but I think it caused enough debate. http://vanessareece.com/2009/08/24/a-victory-pe...

Wow, that is the dumbest thing I have ever seen. Like another comment said, like I need a reason to hate PETA more. I think I am going to send them an email about this, and attach a pic of me wearing a fur coat and eating ribs. Now THAT would be an awesome billboard!!

    Emmie,
you definitely have a good point. I do believe that they could have made a billboard that is much less distasteful (to most people). However, I personally feel that this is still OK. I suppose that this is because I am sick of people being offended by everything these days. Plus, I'm biased since I support PETA's overall goal as well.
    Thanks for the input though!
  • Nick, I appreciate your opinion, I just disagree with the method they went about promoting vegetarianism.
I have no issues with vegetarianism, and if that's what PETA wants to push, fine by me. My sister is a vegan, big deal?
My issue is the way they went about it. They are perpetuating name-calling of overweight people as "whales" in a derogatory manner, which just makes them look self-righteous and ignorant. They could have just as easily gone the route of a hot girl wearing next-to-nothing on the beach promoting weight loss via vegetarianism that way, you know?
  • nick
I don't see a problem with it. People get way too offended these days and the whole point of the campaign is to get people to consider vegetarianism. For some people, this may be what it takes, and that's what matters when they consider how to promote vegetarianism.

Yes nick, but they're using false information. Their goal isn't for people to lose weight and I don't honestly think someone can truly understand why someone would be offended if they have never been overweight themselves. PETAs goal is a fantastic one and I support it completely but I don't think it's right to make others feel bad about themselves for any reason so that they'll join their program.
  • Woah. That's. Just. All. I. Can. Say.

No words. Whoever would think that is okay?
